Never Enough Time

Ack. I actually have a lot of things to talk about that other people probably care about more than my new laptop, but I am so amazingly happy with it, I can't really think about anything else.

Yeah!

I got a new laptop. Finally. My last one died more than a year ago and it was so ancient (original Pentium) that it was only functional as a typewriter when it wasn't logged into my big box.

Not that this one is brand spanking new or anything. It's an IBM Thinkpad R51 2888 (about 3 years old) running Ubuntu 7.10 GNU/Linux. My husband picked it up at a computer show last weekend for $350.

So far, everything works great.

It has three kinds of Net connectivity -- wireless b/g, Ethernet, and 56Kbps modem, so I'm pretty set with that. I do plan on doing a lot of work outside, which is why I wanted a laptop so badly, so I've been thinking about getting a cellular EVDO card. It seems to run about $50-$60 bucks a month for an unlimited data plan these days. I hate to waste money like that, but...well, between homeschooling two kids, running a business and several Web sites, and Life in general, if I don't sneak in my projects whenever I can, they just won't get done. Which means I really need the Net wherever I am. we have a lot of Open Wi-Fi, but not out in places like the park the kids like to go to and stuff. So, I don't know, I guess I'll see.

I have The Gimp, Inkscape, and KPOV working great for art; Scribus and LaTex for page layout; and all the usual multi-media stuff (so I can watch movies while I'm supposed to be working).

Speaking of media, and not exactly related, I actually just bought the new NIN album, which marks the first time I have paid to download music in...well, ever I think. Since Trent was giving it away free of charge and actually free (licensed under a Creative Commons BY-NC-SA [link]) I was motivated to support more free media and actually pay for the download. I've been researching how you can give things away free and still make money with them for a while, and I'm glad it's working well for NIN (not that they're not already rich, but still).

So, that's about it for now.

Later.

I've made a few designs to buy just for friends, but I also have a public store.

Yes, my sales are starting to pick up nicely, and since all you have to do is upload the images (if you already have them) it's a nice supplementary income.

I love T-shirts, too. So, it works out well.

Do you buy or do you sale on that? And if you sell, does it sell good?

Like the DevArt Prints program, but for T-shirts, coffee mugs, posters, etc. You sign up (basic membership is free), upload your artwork or photos, pick what products you want them on, and then you can make them public to sell to other people, or just buy them for yourself.

I've been using it for about a year now and I'm pretty happy with it.

If you decide to sign up, consider using my referral link [link] cuz they give me a 5% bonus or something. :)
